History

While Moores Valley Nurseries was established in the late 1960's, it wasn't until it was sold to the Fletchers in 1995 that its reputation increased and it was turned into Wellington's leading plant nursery, well known for reasonably priced, high quality and hardy plants.

In recent years it has twice won the Wellington's Best Garden Centre/Nursery competition, as voted by listeners of the Breeze radio station.

The Wainuiomata nursery

In 2004, we purchased a disused nursery site in McLeavey Road, south of Levin, and began renovating it. We opened this nursery to the public in May 2006, and it is quickly becoming well known in the surrounding area.

This nursery operates in much the same way that the Wainuiomata branch does, selling plants directly to the public. Because of the more temperate climate of the Levin area, we can grow our more tender plants at this site, before transferring a percentage of them down to the Wainuiomata nursery, where they are hardened to the Wellington climate.

Plants

The Wainuiomata nursery covers approximately two acres and has tens of thousands of plants on site at any one time. The Levin nursery is slightly smaller in size in the retail area, but this does not decrease the range of plants available.

Both the Wainuiomata and Levin nurseries sell a large range of native and exotic trees, shrubs and perennials (most of which are grown at the nursery) at 'grower direct' prices. We are open to the general public from 9.00am to 4.30pm, 7 days per week. There is ample car parking available at both sites.

In June 2007, we installed an 'Isan' irrigation system at the Levin nursery. This system delivers a small quantity of iodine to the plants when they are being watered, which helps with the overall general health of the plants, and helps prevent fungal diseases.

Staff

Our staff members are very knowledgeable and are happy to help you with your queries. Several staff members have completed horticultural apprenticeships and have gained National Certificates in Horticulture, and we also have staff currently in the middle of training. New staff are encouraged and supported in studying towards this Certificate. In addition our General Manager also won the 'Horticultural Young Achiever of the Year' award making him, at the time, the youngest recipient of the award.
