Evergreen

Agathis australis (Kauri)
One of the nicest and largest growing native trees, forming a very stately pyramidal form over a number of years. A great specimen tree. 10m x 5m.
 
Alectryon excelsus (Titoki)
A well shaped native tree. Attractive foliage and bark that is almost black. Excellent choice when a smaller growing specimen tree is needed. 7m x 4m.
 
Azara microphylla
A hardy small tree or large shrub. Small dark green leaves cover the branches which have an arching habit. Fragrant, yellow flowers appear in short clusters from late winter. Can be trimmed for size and shape. Plant in full sun in well drained soil. 4m x 2.5m
 
Corynocarpus laevigatus (Karaka)
A handsome native tree that mature slowly into a well formed tree with large, glossy green leaves. Has heavy crops of a small orange berries in summer and autumn. Young shoots can be frost tender, so plant in a warm position where the falling fruit won't be a mess. 8m x 5m
 
Hoheria populnea (Lacebark)
A graceful and fast growing tree with serrated leaves. Masses of small snowy white flowers provide a magnificent visual display in late summer and autumn. Very hardy and useful for screening and background planting. 5m x 3m
 
Knightia excelsa (Rewa Rewa)
A native tree with a slender, tapering habit. The leaves are long and narrow with a serrated edge. Reddish brown flower appear in summer which attract birds. A neat specimen tree which looks good as a background plant, giving height and shape to the garden. 7m x 2m
 
Magnolia grandiflora
An impressive form of the evergreen Magnolia. Large glossy green leaves have a deep russet underside. Large fragrant white flowers in summer. A stately specimen tree or can be pruned into a tall hedge. 7m x 4m over 10 years.
 
Magnolia grandiflora Little Gem
One of the better forms of evergreen Magnolia. Glossy green leaves have a russet- gold underside. The ‘Little Gem’ refers to it’s white cup shaped flowers which are pleasantly fragrant. Can be pruned hard to keep bushy and to size. 6m x 2m
 
Meryta sinclairii (Puka)
A handsome native tree, valued for its large, glossy green leaves that add tropical appeal to the garden. Plant in deeply worked soil that doesn't dry out, in a spot protected from strong wind and heavy frost. Will handle coastal conditions and great for pots. 6m x 3m
 
Meryta sinclairii
A stunning variegated form of the native Puka. The bold, bright foliage is a wonderful feature plant or consider growing it in a large pot. Protect from frost but otherwise fairly hardy. 4m x 2m
 
Michelia yunnanensis
A small evergreen tree that grows best in a frost- free area either in full sun or part shade. Slow growing, it makes an excellent specimen tree for the smaller garden and will do well in containers where it could be shaped into nice standards. Furry brown buds appear in spring and open into small fragrant white flowers. 5m x 3m
 
Podocarpus totara Aurea (Golden Totara)
The Golden Totara is another heritage or stately native tree. The new growth is soft and a golden yellow, especially in full sun. Handy as a large shelter belt as it responses well to hard pruning. Although it is a large tree, it is slow growing and will reach 5m x 3m after 10 years.
 
Prunus lusitanica
This large shrub or small tree is a versatile and hardy plant. Large glossy green leaves, red stems and white flower spikes make it a very attractive plant. Can be trimmed into a hedge, used for topiary standards or just left as a larger specimen. 6m x 4m.
 
Sophora tetraptera (Kowhai)
The iconic native Kowhai. Admired for the mass of yellow flowers that attract all kinds of birds. A graceful tree with soft foliage that makes a great filler or shade tree. Best if planted away from paths or driveways as the falling flowers can be messy. 6m x 4m
